After almost eleven years as a district court trial judge in Larimer County, Judge Field retired from that position to bring her practical knowledge and experience directly to people and companies who need help solving problems they can't solve for themselves.
As a judge, she handled some of the most complex civil litigation and complicated divorce and custody cases in Northern Colorado. Her combined experience as a judge, law professor, mediator, arbitrator, civil and family law litigator, and improv comedian is unique. She has both litigated and presided over perplexing civil cases, so she knows the local courts and potential jury outcomes in those cases.
Her unique experience as a domestic relations judge, practitioner, mediator and law professor is unmatched by any other family law neutral in Northern Colorado. Those experiences ensure that the solutions that retired Judge Field offers will be creative but realistic and workable, and distinctly fashioned to the parties in the case.
Hon. Julie Kunce Field was appointed to Colorado’s 8th Judicial District Court bench in 2011, where she was noted for her ability to address complex legal issues, and her thoughtful and compassionate approach to cases, particularly those involving children. As a judge, she created the one-of-a-kind Wellness Court, a model problem solving court that comprehensively addresses individuals with mental health issues who are caught up in the criminal justice system. She retired from the bench in 2021 to found JFieldMediation.com and to co-found the Consilium Institute, LLC, an innovation that will transform the way divorce cases are handled in every court in the country.
Before her appointment to the bench, Judge Field served as a law professor and law clinic director at the University of Michigan, Washburn Law School, and the University of Denver College of Law where she supervised students on nationally significant family law, employment law, and civil rights cases. Judge Field founded a successful mediation and arbitration practice, and she is an acclaimed national trainer on family law, litigation practice, and mediation issues; she founded and was the Executive Director of the Confidentiality Institute. Judge Field clerked in Federal District Court in Kansas City, Missouri and then was in private practice with the firm Nutter, McClennen and Fish in Boston, Massachusetts before her teaching career. She has been recognized with numerous awards for her teaching, leadership, and innovative approach to addressing challenging legal issues. Judge Field received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Chicago Law School in 1985 and received her Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1982. Judge Field’s three passions are (1) helping people figure out things they can’t decide for themselves; (2) teaching; and (3) changing the world for the better. All three of those passions are achievable for Judge Field and for all family law professionals through the innovative Consilium Institute.
